I was promoted to the Concept Design Department in 1977 and it was there that major events happened. I had the chance to work with Walt Disney’s original Disneyland artists – Herb Ryman, X Atencio, Sam McKim and Rollie Crump. Under Herb Ryman’s watchful eye, I created literally hundreds of point-of-view sketches and color renderings that provided the early “vision” for EPCOT Center. Herbie was a great mentor and I Iearned many things from him, especially what makes Disney, Disney.

The Living Seas Pavilion, which opened in 1985, presented the most authentic experience of all of EPCOT’s “frontiers” by taking guests to the bottom of the ocean. The saltwater tank, teaming with sea life, is an underwater world of the future where the goal is to mutually benefit mankind and our planet. At the time, the coral reef tank at the Living Seas Pavilion was the largest self-contained tank in the world.
The undersea journey begins by descending to the bottom of ocean floor in devices known as Hydrolators. It’s then off to Sea Base Alpha where guests experience life in an undersea research lab.
The Living Seas Pavilion was groundbreaking in its technology and its vision of preserving Earth’s greatest resource.
